how to maintain my air conditionerBecause regular maintenance is so important for keeping your air conditioner operating efficiently, we would like to show you how to maintain your air conditioner. Your air conditioner will run more effectively and use less energy if it is properly maintained. Besides maintaining a more comfortable temperature, you will also get more years out of your air conditioner if you do regular A/C maintenance.

Filter Maintenance

One of the most important aspects of maintaining your air conditioner is to replace or clean the air filters. Clogged or dirty filters block the airflow and hinder efficiency. A clogged or dirty filter can cause your air conditioner to use up to 15% more energy. It can also cause dirt to get into the air conditioner. Your air conditioner unit will have a filter mounted in the grill that faces the room. Central air conditioners will have a filter somewhere along the return air duct. Some filters can be cleaned and reused. Other filters need to be replaced. Follow your manufacturer’s directions on how often the filter should be replaced or cleaned. For normal use, your filter should be cleaned or replaced every month or two. For homes with fur pets and/or heavy dust, you may need to change or replace the filter more often.

Evaporator and Condensor Coils

The air conditioner’s evaporator coils are used to absorb heat in the unit. They will get dirty over time and quicker if you don’t change the filter as often as you should. The dirt will reduce the airflow and interfere with the coil’s ability to absorb heat. The evaporator coil should be cleaned as needed. Outdoor units can become dirty quickly. You can help keep your unit cleaner by removing debris and foliage away from the unit.

The aluminum fins on the evaporator and condenser coils can get bent. This will also block the airflow and cause your system to run inefficiently.

Condenser Drains and Water Dripping

Make sure your drains are working properly. If your unit begins to drip or the drains appear full, you could have a clogged drain. Water may also drip around your unit if the seal around the window is not tight. This will allow cool air to escape and require your air conditioner to work harder.
