how to save on heating costs this fallWe’d like to show you how to save on heating costs this fall. If you haven’t already had an energy assessment, now may be a good time to call your HVAC technician to see how efficient your heating system is. You might be surprised to learn there are many ways to cut heating costs this fall. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
1.  Open all south facing window coverings to allow the sun to warm your house naturally in the daytime.
2.  Cover drafty windows with tight fitting plastic. Select energy efficient window treatments the next time you replace your blinds or shades.
3.  Set your thermostat to the lowest setting you can tolerate during the day. Wear warm clothing to stay warm. At night lower the thermostat 10 to 15 degrees more for savings of up to 10%.
4.  Seal Leaks around windows and doors using weather stripping or caulk. Find and seal leaks around pipes, gaps around the chimney and fireplace, gaps around recessed lights, and leaks in the unfinished spaces in cupboards and closets.

Schedule Your Fall Heater Maintenance

Fall heater maintenance is a preventative way to keep your heating system in top running condition. Your HVAC technician will make sure your system is clean and well lubricated: filters and vents that need changed or cleaned will be taken care of. HVAC maintenance will keep your system lasting longer and prevent many costly repairs from occurring. We will change your filter during your HVAC fall maintenance but ideally you should change it more often especially if you have pets or excess dust.

The Truth About Fireplaces

If you leave your chimney flue open all the time, you are losing heated air. It’s like having a window open in your home. Close the chimney flue after you’ve had a fire. Traditional fireplace efficiency is not too effective when it comes to heating your house. Unless you have a newer fireplace insert you could be taking warm air from your room and simply sending it up the chimney. A better option to keep some of the heat in is to open a window near by about 1 inch. Close the doors to the room and turn your heat thermostat down to 50 or 55 degrees. This allows more of the heat to come into the room. Traditional fireplaces have been banned from new construction in some places because of the air pollution they cause. Talk to your heating and air company about a better way to heat your home if you typically use a wood burning fireplace.
