furnace safety tipsHomeowners in central KY often use a furnace during the cold winter months to stay warm. We often forget about our furnace when it’s working properly. Before you turn your furnace on and forget about it for the season, make sure you understand these furnace safety tips and how they can protect your family.

Furnace Safety Tips

  1. Make sure there is nothing flammable around your furnace. This includes: papers, sawdust, old rags, wood scraps and flammable liquids. Gas and Kerosene are not only flammable, but their vapors are easily ignited as well. Make sure they are always stored in a tight container far away from open flames and your furnace.
  2. Keep your furnace filter clean. If you smoke, have lots of dust or pets, you may need to change your filter more than once a month in the winter.
  3. Install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Have a HVAC tech inspect your furnace each season to ensure it is running properly. This will prevent reduced oxygen that can be dangerous.
  4. Make sure the chimney and flue are inspected on a regular basis (at least annually). When smoke builds up, carbon monoxide levels can become dangerously high. Soot can also build up causing a fire in some cases.
  5. Never attempt furnace repairs or furnace maintenance on your own.   HVAC techs are highly trained and Nate certified to provide you the service you need that is safe and won’t damage your HVAC system.

Furnace Maintenance

Your HVAC company in Central Kentucky is available to schedule regular HVAC maintenance. You can join their comfort assurance program to ensure your system is running smoothly. A professional HVAC technician will come twice a year to inspect both your furnace and AC units to make sure you are ready for the new season. The best part about signing up is that you can forget about calling and scheduling each year. You also have the added security of knowing your system is running efficiently and will last longer and need fewer repairs because you are taking good care of it.
