4 signs your furnace is failingHere are 4 signs your furnace is failing even if it’s still working. You may know that your furnace is getting older. Many people put off replacing an older furnace until it finally quits working. The problem is that as your furnace ages it may begin to cost you more money and it may become unsafe to use. Such a system heats the home using lots of energy and it no longer provides the air quality your family deserves. Don’t wait until a cold night in February when you have no heat, to replace your furnace. Here are the 4 signs your furnace is failing:

1. Furnace Age

The average life expectancy of a furnace is between 16 and 20 years. If you know your getting close to the end of that time, you should begin researching furnaces. Usually your furnace will begin making funny noises and you’ll notice it doesn’t sound like it used to. It is much easier to buy a furnace when it’s a planned expense and you have time to do the shopping than during an emergency when you need it replaced right away. Don’t worry though; if ADA Heating and Air is servicing your HVAC repair we will make sure you receive the best equipment for your home.

2. Furnace Efficiency

As your furnace ages it starts to lose it’s efficiency. You will notice higher heating bills and your furnace may run longer to heat your home. This puts even more wear on your furnace.   The money you spend in gas and/or electric could easily pay for a new furnace. If you have been calling your HVAC repairman for furnace repairs often, then your furnace may not be operating as cost effectively as it should be. Furnaces tend to break the most in the last 2 years of their life. If you are experiencing a lot of repairs, it may be time to look at new furnaces.

3. Furnace  Comfort

If you are constantly adjusting your thermostat, your furnace may no longer be distributing the air throughout your home the way it should. You might notice some rooms are colder than others too.  If you’re putting on layers of clothes and taking them off you might be having a hot flash or you may just need a new furnace.

4. Furnace Safety

Older furnaces do not allow enough moisture into the home. You may notice dry air causes a multitude of problems for your family especially during the winter months. Old heating systems don’t produce clean air. The extra dust may cause problems including allergies. If you notice yellow flames or a flickering flame you may have poisonous carbon monoxide in your home. Other possible signs include: streaks of soot around the furnace, no upward draft in the chimney, moisture around windows, walls and other cold surfaces, rusting on flue pipes or around the vent pipe outside, leaking around chimney or vents. Older furnaces have potential to leak carbon monoxide. You may notice your family have frequent headaches, a burning feeling in the nose or eyes, nausea, disorientation or flu like symptoms.   If you think your symptoms are the result of carbon monoxide, open windows and air out your house and call your HVAC repairman immediately.  Consider installing a carbon monoxide alarm in your home if you have an older furnace.
