homeowners looking at papers

Knowing the in’s and out’s of your home’s HVAC system can be daunting, but one of the burdens that comes with the amazing experience of homeownership is that all of your home’s appliances and equipment are now your responsibility to maintain. While an HVAC professional, like the experts at ADA Heating & Air, are going to be qualified to identify problems with your HVAC system and help you to solve them, as a homeowner, you should also possess a base level of knowledge about how your heating and cooling system works. ADA Heating & Air is here to provide a short checklist of things you will want to make sure you know about your HVAC system.

  1. Know where your air filter is

Perhaps the most important and the simplest thing you can know about your HVAC system is where its air filter is. The air filter of your HVAC unit is designed to catch any debris that enters your system from also getting into your home. Like the filter in your car, though, your HVAC system’s air filter won’t last forever, and most recommendations argue for replacing your air filter one to four months after you install it initially. This is a cheap and easy process, and so by making sure you know where to find your system’s air filter, you can be prepared for one of the simpler parts of HVAC maintenance.

  1. Know where your unit is

If you can find your air filter, then you had to have found your unit as a whole. But more than simply knowing where your unit is, you need to know how your unit’s location is going to affect its performance and your quality of life. Indoor units are fairly unobtrusive and simple to maintain, but outdoor units can pose some unique problems. For starters, they are quite loud, and so having them installed near a bedroom can make anyone’s life a bit more complicated. Also, the conditions of the weather can negatively impact your unit’s longevity. If it gets overly hot, the unit can overheat, so make sure that if your HVAC unit is outside, it is near some shade. But be careful with this: trees and shrubs can also lead to debris getting caught in your HVAC unit, so keep them close but not too close.

  1. Know how efficient it is

As our technology gets more and more advanced, we are finding ways to make every aspect of our homes more efficient as well. More efficient appliances means that you will save money and help the environment at the same time, so making sure that all of your home appliances are running efficiently is of the utmost importance. If you find that your current HVAC system is not running as efficiently as you would like, then feel free to contact the knowledgeable HVAC professionals at ADA Heating & Air to learn how to get a more efficient HVAc unit for your home.
